She Speaks Conference 2010

The conference is only two weeks away! I’m excited about returning this year and meeting new friends who have a heart for the Lord.

I noticed a lot of comments on the conference blog about tips and advice, and a couple of people have contacted me asking questions, so I thought I’d share some thoughts about last year’s conference.

I was nervous last year because I was rooming by myself, and I only knew one other person attending. I thought it was going to be an ultra-professional, ultra-competitive environment. It was the complete opposite! The conference (and the atmosphere) was encouraging, uplifting, worshipful, and inspirational.

It was a group of women (mostly young moms) just like me! A group of women who love God and want to use their gifts and talents for God. A group of women with dreams and goals, searching for direction from God.

Lysa TerKeurst made it clear during one of the general sessions that it’s not about competition. It’s about encouraging each other. If you go with the attitude that it’s all about you and your agenda, you’ll miss the whole point.

Cheri Keaggy was the worship leader last year, and she did a fantastic job of leading us to the heart of God during all the general sessions. I felt the Proverbs 31 team organized the conference in such a way that all the women attending could hear from God.

So ladies, relax! Go with the attitude that you will be surrounded by loving women who are very similar to you. Be ready to meet new friends and make connections that can only be explained by the hand of God. Consider it a privilege if someone shares her heart and dream with you! Go with an open spirit to hear a special word from God just for you.

Practical tips:

Some of the rooms are very cold. Bring a sweater. I wore dress pants each day.

Last year, Proverbs 31 gave everyone a notebook. It contained notes with outlines or fill-in-the-blanks for all the sessions/classes. This was extremely helpful. I assume they will be doing this again this year. I brought a journal to take notes, but I didn’t need it. I also carried a small Bible in my purse.

Bring some business cards. I got mine from www.vistaprint.com

Take some time to get alone with God. Last year, there was a prayer/meditation room set up. I went in the room, and it was awesome! In addition to a quiet peaceful place to pray, there were tables with the names of God and a verse printed on papers. Under each name of God, the Proverbs 31 team placed the names of every person attending the conference. It was incredible to find my name and read about the character quality of God that was selected especially for me.

The most awesome thing about going to She Speaks was knowing that the team prayed for me by name, and I felt covered in prayer. I knew it was not an accident that I was there. It was a divine appointment.

I hope to meet some people online before the conference. Leave a comment with your website. I’d love to check out your blog, or send me an email if you don’t have a blog.

I’d like to thank the Academy…

Not really. But I would like to thank my groovy friend Carra for giving me my very first blog award. I’m excited!

Carra and her husband used to be in my Sunday School class before they quit their jobs to serve Jesus in full-time ministry. I so admire them and what they do. Carra is also my “natural living” hero! She knows a ton more than me. I’m like her little student, soaking up all her knowledge. I mean, the woman makes her own yogurt–you gotta check it out!

The Beautiful Blogger Award tradition is to pass it on to seven (or less) friends and share seven interesting facts about yourself. So…

The Beautiful Blogger Award goes to…

Beverly @ Joy In The Journey–Beverly is a special friend from college and a fellow grammarian. She’s a military wife who homeschools her five little munchkins, and she’s a super cool scrapper and stamper who has a huge heart for God. Basically, I want to be like her when I grow up.

Chrystie @ Path From The Head To The Heart–God brought Chrystie into my life through a mutual friend, and we got to know each other at the She Speaks Conference last year. Chrystie’s life is a beautiful testimony of God’s redeeming power. Her life proves that there is no person beyond the reach of God. He can rescue you from any addiction or trouble or despair. I love Chrystie’s honesty and transparency.

DeAnna @ I am Blessed–Kevin and I are happy to have DeAnna and her husband in our Sunday School class. DeAnna blogs about her two precious girls, and I enjoy looking at her gorgeous photos. I need to take some lessons from her!

Heather @ shopgirl eats–Heather is one of my bestest friends from college. She will definitely be a lifelong pal. Heather owns a coffee shop (how cool is that?), and she uses her crazy good writing skills to share yummy recipes. Oh, and she has style. The girl can put an outfit together, unlike me (the black-pants-go-with-everything girl).

Jodi @ Back40Life–Jodi is another Jesus-girl who used to be in my Sunday School class. She blogs about her life with her two little ones and what she’s learning from God.

Joy @ Joy in This Journey–Joy is a tech-writing-major friend from college. She’s one of those people who will probably do a million more things than me in a lifetime. I wish I had half of her energy and ambition! Joy blogs about her family and “keeping faith in the face of hard things,” especially the loss of her daughter Ellie who went to be with Jesus when she was 8 1/2 years old. I cry every time I read this post about Ellie’s homegoing. Every parent should read it.

I hope you guys will check out these beautiful bloggers!

Seven facts about me:

  1. Born and raised in NY. (I heart NY.) I think it is the most beautiful state in the nation. Really, you should visit sometime.
  2. Schooled in OH. Loved Cedarville University and would go back in a second. Liked OH except for the wind, sideways rain, and lack of mountains.
  3. Moved South by myself two weeks after college graduation. Will always be a Yankee, but I love where I live now.
  4. As you can see from #3, I’m still paranoid about sharing my last name and location. I’m just not thrilled about the possibility of people showing up unexpectedly at my door. I know they wouldn’t be bringing me flowers.
  5. I’m 5’11″, and I wear size 12 shoes. Did you know that Oprah wears size 11? I’m not an Oprah groupie, but I read about her shoe size in her magazine when I was waiting to get my hair cut, i.e., I don’t subscribe to her mag! “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” (Isaiah 52:7) I’m glad God thinks my feet are beautiful because the world sure doesn’t!
  6. I always read instruction manuals. Sometimes I read every single word. Two reasons: I used to write instruction manuals for a living, and I know someone put A LOT of work into writing that manual. And, I like to make sure I do things right the first time.
  7. I am a major introvert. People wear. me. out. If I don’t get enough alone time every day, I start to shut down. There are days when I seriously dream of being a hermit in the mountains, sitting on a porch, spending every day reading and writing.

p.s. This isn’t the amazing thing I wrote about a couple days ago, although this award is pretty cool. ;-) That other story is coming soon!

She Speaks Conference 2009

I’m excited about going to She Speaks–a Christian Women’s Conference for writers and speakers–at the end of this month. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back…

If you’ve stumbled upon my blog and you are also attending, leave a comment or contact me at lisakellywrites at gmail dot com.

This will be my first time attending, and I don’t know anyone else going. If you’re a newbie like me and want to connect with someone and maybe meet for a meal, drop me a line!

I’m doing the writer’s track.

Looking forward to meeting lots of new people at She Speaks!
