Sleep Deprivation and Cuteness

Our new little Piper: Two pounds of pure adorable. We’ve had Piper for five days, and we’re getting quite attached to her!

Sure she cries at night, but somehow her tail wagging, playfulness, and outright cuteness make us forget about all of the sleep deprivation.

The kids love her (except for her nipping), and we’re so glad she is part of our family.

She is nine weeks old.

Local friends: Please stop by! We’d love for you to meet Piper.

Congratz on the new family member! Is that a Dachshund? I can never determine toy/mini versions of a breed when they are puppies. They are so fun and loyal. Does she have a story behind how she ended up joining your family?

Yes, she’s a Miniature Dachshund. Their max weight is 11 pounds. I knew I wanted a small dog with short hair, and I read that dachshunds make great pets. Caleb started asking for a dog over a year ago, and he really liked dachshunds as well.

The plan was to get a dog this past spring when Caleb was finishing 1st grade, but my back and neck were hurting so badly we decided to hold off for a while.

Then our fish died this summer, and Caleb really wanted to get another pet. When school started a few weeks ago, his teacher said they were going to have a Pet Day on Sept. 16th, so Caleb was hoping to have a pet to bring to school on Pet Day.

Last Sunday, Kevin and I talked about it. We weren’t sure if we were ready for a puppy, but all the other animals we thought about didn’t appeal to us: rabbit, bird, lizard, hamster, etc. So we agreed to look for a dachshund, but we said we weren’t going to kill ourselves to find one before Pet Day. If we found one great, if not, we would just have to wait.

That night, we looked in the newspaper, and there was an ad for CKC mini dachshunds. We checked the CKC website and saw that the breeder is a preferred breeder, and she is about an hour from here.

We only wanted a female. I called Monday morning, and the breeder wasn’t home, but I talked to her mom. She said there was one female. (There were six puppies in the litter, and she was the only female.) I told her I wanted to come and see the puppy. She said the breeder wouldn’t be home until about 6 pm.

The breeder called me back at 5:30 pm. She said there was a man who came and looked at Piper that morning. He said he wanted her, but he wanted to check out one other litter in another town before he decided. The breeder said he didn’t put a deposit on her, so she was still available.

I drove out there (she’s way out in the country) and arrived at 8:15 pm (after a stop to Petsmart to get all the essentials). The kennels were clean and all the dogs looked happy and well cared for. I looked at the mother and father, and they looked good.

Of course, when I saw Piper, I fell in love with her immediately. When I held her, she snuggled right up to me. I arrived home with her at 9:45 pm. Kevin was smitten with her as soon as he saw her. He volunteered to get up with her every night to let her out and at 5:00 am every morning. What a guy! I told him to watch as much college football as he wants for that ;-)

I really felt like it was meant to be. :-)

I took her to the vet on Wednesday, and he said she looks very healthy. She did great for her first well check-up.

    What a cutie.

We were not brave enough to get a puppy so we went with a Humane Society 2 year old. Unfortunately, he thinks and destroys stuff just like a puppy.
