Robbing My Brothers and Sisters

I mentioned doing a series of posts about lessons I’ve learned in the past eight months (since I became a chiropractic patient). This post is the first of three.

My recent trip to the ER was a blessing in disguise because it led to a friend calling me last week, which led to God driving home a BIG lesson: I have been robbing my brothers and sisters.

I’ve been very hush-hush about the struggles with pain I have had recently with my chiropractic journey. I know the reasons why, but I won’t go into all of them here. You don’t have time to read a novel. I’ll just boil it down and say pride and fear of what people will think are at the root.

So last Wednesday my friend Amanda (from Sunday School) called and asked how I was feeling. I opened up, took off the mask, and shared with her my doubts, fears, frustrations, beliefs, and hopes. She listened. She shared some of her own personal struggles. We prayed for each other over the phone. She ministered to me big time. (Amanda said a couple things in her prayer that brought two major breakthroughs–more on that in the next post.)

My willingness to share my true thoughts and feelings allowed my friend to help me. And in return I helped her. When I refuse to reveal the difficult stuff in my life, I rob my brothers and sisters of the opportunity to minister to me. I prevent them from using their gifts and fulfilling their purpose.

Most of the time I am a self-sufficient, I’ll-handle-this-myself-thank-you-very-much kind of person. I don’t want to burden others with my problems. But that 45-minute phone call proved to me that we are not made to handle things alone. We are made to lean on each other. I don’t want to steal the joy that a friend could experience from helping me or my family.

I am asking God to humble me and give me a willing heart to accept help. By His grace, I will choose to be real and allow others to walk alongside me, sharing the burden.

I’d like to thank the Academy…

Not really. But I would like to thank my groovy friend Carra for giving me my very first blog award. I’m excited!

Carra and her husband used to be in my Sunday School class before they quit their jobs to serve Jesus in full-time ministry. I so admire them and what they do. Carra is also my “natural living” hero! She knows a ton more than me. I’m like her little student, soaking up all her knowledge. I mean, the woman makes her own yogurt–you gotta check it out!

The Beautiful Blogger Award tradition is to pass it on to seven (or less) friends and share seven interesting facts about yourself. So…

The Beautiful Blogger Award goes to…

Beverly @ Joy In The Journey–Beverly is a special friend from college and a fellow grammarian. She’s a military wife who homeschools her five little munchkins, and she’s a super cool scrapper and stamper who has a huge heart for God. Basically, I want to be like her when I grow up.

Chrystie @ Path From The Head To The Heart–God brought Chrystie into my life through a mutual friend, and we got to know each other at the She Speaks Conference last year. Chrystie’s life is a beautiful testimony of God’s redeeming power. Her life proves that there is no person beyond the reach of God. He can rescue you from any addiction or trouble or despair. I love Chrystie’s honesty and transparency.

DeAnna @ I am Blessed–Kevin and I are happy to have DeAnna and her husband in our Sunday School class. DeAnna blogs about her two precious girls, and I enjoy looking at her gorgeous photos. I need to take some lessons from her!

Heather @ shopgirl eats–Heather is one of my bestest friends from college. She will definitely be a lifelong pal. Heather owns a coffee shop (how cool is that?), and she uses her crazy good writing skills to share yummy recipes. Oh, and she has style. The girl can put an outfit together, unlike me (the black-pants-go-with-everything girl).

Jodi @ Back40Life–Jodi is another Jesus-girl who used to be in my Sunday School class. She blogs about her life with her two little ones and what she’s learning from God.

Joy @ Joy in This Journey–Joy is a tech-writing-major friend from college. She’s one of those people who will probably do a million more things than me in a lifetime. I wish I had half of her energy and ambition! Joy blogs about her family and “keeping faith in the face of hard things,” especially the loss of her daughter Ellie who went to be with Jesus when she was 8 1/2 years old. I cry every time I read this post about Ellie’s homegoing. Every parent should read it.

I hope you guys will check out these beautiful bloggers!

Seven facts about me:

  1. Born and raised in NY. (I heart NY.) I think it is the most beautiful state in the nation. Really, you should visit sometime.
  2. Schooled in OH. Loved Cedarville University and would go back in a second. Liked OH except for the wind, sideways rain, and lack of mountains.
  3. Moved South by myself two weeks after college graduation. Will always be a Yankee, but I love where I live now.
  4. As you can see from #3, I’m still paranoid about sharing my last name and location. I’m just not thrilled about the possibility of people showing up unexpectedly at my door. I know they wouldn’t be bringing me flowers.
  5. I’m 5’11″, and I wear size 12 shoes. Did you know that Oprah wears size 11? I’m not an Oprah groupie, but I read about her shoe size in her magazine when I was waiting to get my hair cut, i.e., I don’t subscribe to her mag! “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” (Isaiah 52:7) I’m glad God thinks my feet are beautiful because the world sure doesn’t!
  6. I always read instruction manuals. Sometimes I read every single word. Two reasons: I used to write instruction manuals for a living, and I know someone put A LOT of work into writing that manual. And, I like to make sure I do things right the first time.
  7. I am a major introvert. People wear. me. out. If I don’t get enough alone time every day, I start to shut down. There are days when I seriously dream of being a hermit in the mountains, sitting on a porch, spending every day reading and writing.

p.s. This isn’t the amazing thing I wrote about a couple days ago, although this award is pretty cool. ;-) That other story is coming soon!

Funny Hair

Clown Day at school today. I couldn’t find a costume in Caleb’s size, but I like the wig and red nose. Thanks for letting me borrow the wig, Elizabeth!

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

What is the name of this tree?

Just another reason why I love living in the South–all the beautiful flowering trees. Once again, this isn’t mine. It’s in my neighborhood, just a few houses down. It’s only a couple feet from the sidewalk–that’s considered common property, right!?!

I don’t know what kind of tree this is, and I’m too lazy to look it up. Can anyone tell me?

When I walked by this tree a couple days ago, there were a ton of bees on it having a field day. The whole tree was buzzing!

Anyway, as you can see, I’m still here. God did something amazing yesterday in my life, and I thought, “How can I not write about this?” So I’m working on getting those thoughts down. They will be coming soon!

Happy

St. Patrick’s Day!

I wanted to write about the real Saint Patrick, but I’m having trouble making time for research today. Actually, I’m debating about taking a sabbatical from blogging for a while. I have gotten behind on a few other important things. I really feel I need to put some other things to rest, but man I so love blogging more often.

And you guys are blowing me away–20, 40, 60 hits a day (even 100 hits one day!). Thank you! I would love to devote 4 or 5 hours a day to the blog community, but then I would REALLY be neglecting my responsibilities. So we’ll see. I’m going to do my best to keep everything balanced, but if you don’t hear from me for a while, you’ll know why.

Hope you are having a great Wednesday!

The List Maker

I’m a list maker. I always have a running To Do list, and I always go to Whole Foods and Target with a list. My goal is to shop at the grocery store only once a week, so I want to make sure I get everything I need. I’ll forget something if I don’t have my list, and it’s a personal pet peeve to go back for a forgotten item.

Writing out my grocery list every week used to be the norm for me. Then I saw an idea in Real Simple magazine that I adopted about a year ago. I created a Word document with spaces for my weekly menu and a list of the items I usually buy, organized by aisle. Each week, I print the list, fill in the menu, and check the items I need for the week. When I am at the store, I just cross off the item as I pick it up. It has saved me a bunch of time.

Sidenote about Picture Of The Day (POTD): I’ve been kind of slack about taking pictures every day. Some days I take a pic. Some days I take more than one. Some days I don’t take any. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s okay to take pictures of seemingly mundane and boring things because that’s what life is about–finding the positive (and sometimes the beauty) in the everyday normal stuff.

Personal update: Caleb is feeling better. He only had the stomach bug one day (Saturday), and he went back to school on Monday. The rest of us did not get it (big praise). For those who haven’t heard: I spent a couple hours at the ER on Saturday night because my doctor’s nurse thought I was having a reaction to the antibiotic I was taking for a UTI (urinary tract infection). The ER doctor didn’t think it was a reaction, but she told me to take Benadryl. The Benadryl didn’t help.

It seems that the numbness and weakness I was experiencing is related to the problems I have had with my scoliosis and neck. I have been feeling a little better since Saturday, but things still don’t seem quite right. My chiropractor is doing a great job trying to figure out the problem and fix it. God has been faithful, and He has taught me some big lessons through all of my ups and (mostly) downs with my back and neck. I’m thinking I might need to blog about some of the things I’ve learned, so be watching for a possible series of posts on new God Lessons.

No Picture Today

I was going to take a picture of my Lysol can and my vinegar spray bottle, but I am too busy disinfecting. Poor Caleb seems to have a stomach virus. One of his friends went home sick from school yesterday, and I think Caleb caught the bug. So today I’m hurriedly trying to clean and de-germ the house before it hits me. Last time Caleb got sick none of us caught it, so we’ll see what happens this time.

I’m bummed because I was planning to go to a benefit concert tonight, but Kevin will go by himself now. Oh well. Life happens.

Yellow

Yesterday was a busy day. Wasn’t home much. I missed connecting with you here, but I’m glad to be back in blog world today.

These beauties are not mine. I wish they were. I saw them at Caleb’s school and snapped their picture on Wednesday before the rain came and made them bow to the ground. On Monday, I’m sure they will be standing tall again greeting everyone with their sunny faces. Hello, Spring!

Have a terrific weekend, friends!

Blowing in the Wind

“The people brought children to Jesus, hoping he might touch them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus was irate and let them know it: ‘Don’t push these children away. Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in.’ Then, gathering the children up in his arms, he laid his hands of blessing on them.” Mark 10:13-16 (The Message)

We’ve Gone Green

I’ve never been a coffee drinker. Can’t stand the taste. I’ve tried all different kinds of coffee and added all kinds of stuff to it–even cocoa. Just don’t like it. Give me coffee cake or coffee ice cream any day, but you can keep the drink. I’ve never been a tea drinker either–cold or hot–until now.

For the last few years, the media has hyped up green tea. I would listen and think, “I should probably drink that. It sounds like it is really good for you.” The only thing that kept me from trying it was the color. It’s green. I honestly thought it would taste like asparagus, green beans, broccoli, and brussel sprout juice. I love green veggies, but the thought of drinking green vegetable juice made me avoid green tea.

But recently, I read an article from my chiro about the boatload of benefits from green tea. It can fight cancer, boost your immune system, increase resistance to stress, and help maintain a healthy metabolism and cholesterol levels. (That’s just a few of its super powers.) Isn’t it funny how you can hear something ten times and you don’t believe it until someone you trust tells you it’s true?

So I tried it. And I was very surprised it doesn’t taste like green juice. It just tastes like…tea. Go figure. I actually like the taste of it. So now Kevin and I are big tea drinkers. When the kids go to bed, we’re like two old people sitting at the kitchen table chatting and sipping our hot tea. My grandmother would be proud. She drank tea every day. I can still hear the sound of her spoon clanging against her cup as she stirred milk into her tea.
