We’ve Gone Green

I’ve never been a coffee drinker. Can’t stand the taste. I’ve tried all different kinds of coffee and added all kinds of stuff to it–even cocoa. Just don’t like it. Give me coffee cake or coffee ice cream any day, but you can keep the drink. I’ve never been a tea drinker either–cold or hot–until now.

For the last few years, the media has hyped up green tea. I would listen and think, “I should probably drink that. It sounds like it is really good for you.” The only thing that kept me from trying it was the color. It’s green. I honestly thought it would taste like asparagus, greenĀ beans, broccoli, and brussel sprout juice. I love green veggies, but the thought of drinking green vegetable juice made me avoid green tea.

But recently, I read an article from my chiro about the boatload of benefits from green tea. It can fight cancer, boost your immune system, increase resistance to stress, and help maintain a healthy metabolism and cholesterol levels. (That’s just a few of its super powers.) Isn’t it funny how you can hear something ten times and you don’t believe it until someone you trust tells you it’s true?

So I tried it. And I was very surprised it doesn’t taste like green juice. It just tastes like…tea. Go figure. I actually like the taste of it. So now Kevin and I are big tea drinkers. When the kids go to bed, we’re like two old people sitting at the kitchen table chatting and sipping our hot tea. My grandmother would be proud. She drank tea every day. I can still hear the sound of her spoon clanging against her cup as she stirred milk into her tea.

Another Great tea is Tulsi Tea. Couldn’t find the other site I liked about the benefits of Tulsi tea, but here is Dr. Mercola: http://organicindia.mercola.com/tulsi-tea.aspx (I personally am not a huge Dr. Mercola supporter just because he doesn’t believe in Vegetarian/Vegan diets and I do, but some of his info I like.) I drink the Organic India brand vanilla creme king – yum! My grandmother was the same way, she drank green tea every day, I can see her used tea bag in her little holder in my mind. Its so relaxing to curl up with a nice cup of tea. :)

I have heard of Tulsi tea. (I get Dr. Mercola’s e-newsletter everyday, and he sent that article out last week.) I have a friend from India, and I was planning to ask her about it. I skimmed the article, but it sounded like Mercola likes Tulsi tea better than green tea. Maybe I’ll try it. Thanks for sharing, DeAnna!

Ted and I have green tea almost every morning! Sometimes it’s chai green tea. :-) He gave up coffee years ago but wanted a hot drink in the mornings, so tea it is. I love hot tea with honey!

Yay, two more tea drinkers! I also put (local) honey in mine. Yummy. Or maybe you meant hot tea with YOUR honey! :-) Either way, honey in the tea or drinking tea with your honey, both are great! Thanks for sharing.

I drink my tea mostly at night (love Sweet Dreams which is mint/chamomile) since that is the only time I can finish it without being interrupted so many times it goes cold. ;-) But I have also become a coffee-drinker and like it black! My hubby roasts his own green coffee beans, which is ever so much better than any store-bought coffee out there (we are trying beans from all over the world). After beans are roasted, they need to be used within just a couple of weeks or they get stale. And fresh grounds need to be used within just a few days before they get stale. Which is why it’s hard to get a truly good cup of coffee from the grocery store or restaurant. :-)

I think that’s why I enjoy my tea at night too. So I won’t get interrupted. There is just something so calming and relaxing about tea. Great stress-buster!

That’s interesting about the coffee beans. I’ll have to tell my in-laws about that. They are big coffee drinkers. Actually, my mil reads my blog, so maybe she’ll see your comment ;-)
